Equal Marriage became law today in Washington DC. Congratulations to my Gay brothers and sisters on your victory.
Yesterday,Catholic Charities in Washington DC announced that in order to not offer spousal benefits to same sex married couples, they will no longer offer them to newly employed heterosexual couples either. This is a desperate move by an institution whose ideals are becoming irrelevant. In doing this, they have exposed their true motive of hate for Gay people showing no concern for their employees. Imagine with me for one minute a religion that claims Christ’s love as their core value, denying basic health coverage to their employee’s spouses out of their irrational hate for Gay people. Where is the love of Christ in this? My guess is that the church is trying to incite the people of DC against their Gay neighbors by attempting to demonize us. If one Gay person is harmed due to this action, their blood is on the Catholic Church and their Pope.
In Massachusetts equal marriage is the law. The Catholic owned Caritas Christi Health Care system is the largest community hospital based network in New England. Quietly they have been providing spousal insurance to heterosexual married couples while not providing them to domestic partners and same sex married couples. They do this while continuing to receive state funding. Message to Caritas, the jigs up.
Keep a hopeful eye on the California Prop 8 Trial.
I was watching the local news last night. They did a story about an African American kid who committed suicide because his peers made fun of him as they thought he was Gay. The news anchor said he committed suicides because his “School mates accused him of being Gay.” One may be accused of a crime, telling a lie or cheating, among many other negative things, but being Gay is not one of them. Using the word “accuse”, just perpetuates the notion that there is something wrong with being Gay. I accuse the news program of homophobic wording in a news story. The anchor’s name is Matt Lorch of channel seven WHDH-TV. Here is a link to send Matt a message, http://www1.whdh.com/newsteam/?id=MI2510, and here is his twitter account, @mlorchon7. Go ahead and let him know how you feel, I did.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us, Michael. Both the good and the not so good.
ReplyDeleteThe Catholic church's deepening hatred against gays continues to astound and disgust me. It looks like they've lost all sense of proportion, not to mention the last shred of human decency. How can depriving people of benefits possibly the sort of action a church takes, a church which purports to stand for Love, no less? Jesus would be turning in his grave were he still in it!
Caritas isn't far behind in despicability, as far as I'm concerned. That sort of "morality" is so many centuries behind, it's not funny.
Sent a note to Matt Lorch as well - not sure whether he was the one personally responsible for the wording or not, but if not him, someone at that TV station needs to start thinking about the impact these sorts of messsages make. The media have a role to play and a responsibility to accept in how people regard their fellow human beings. That example you mentioned was NOT oe of their most stellar moments!
Hello Micheal(and Serena)
ReplyDeleteSpoke via email with Matt Lorch, following is his email response to me:
Stone,
Thanks for the email.
It's a good question. The last thing I wanted to do was offend anyone.
The boy was still very young. His mother made a point of saying he was not gay. That's why I used the word "accused".
I have close friends and loved who are gay.
Once again, I apologize if anyone was offended.
Matt Lorch
I ommitted only his email, otherwise the email is as I receieved it. It's good to know that there are ways to deal with things....and let others know how we feel to clear up misunderstandings- Stone

Even though Matt Lorch has reportedly apologized, I'd appreciate it if you provide some additional since there is nothing about this on the WHDH website or their Twitter.
ReplyDeleteI too think there should be a statement of apology on the news cast and have contacted Matt and the station again.
